Wieliczka Salt Mine

Visit the legendary salt mines of Wieliczka near Krakow and admire the beautiful salt sculpture with "white gold".

The most famous salt mine in Poland is located away from the city centre by a  25-30 minute drive.

It is situated in the town of Wieliczka.

The town's rock salt deposits have been excavated since the thirteenth century. Tourist routes for the mine visitors were opened in the nineteenth century. What is worth noting, in the twentieth century, namely in 1978, Wieliczka salt mines were entered on the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List.

Along the route, one can admire, inter alia, beautiful chambers carved in salt, amazing underground lakes, majestic joinery structures and unique salt sculptures. The mine features nearly three kilometres of winding corridors, 800 wooden stairs and a descent to a depth of 135 meters below ground.

The sightseeing begins at the Daniłowicz Shaft. It is here that visitors get to meet their guide, who will tell them en route about the history and secrets of the mine, as well as about the forces of nature and the ethos of hard labour propagated by the numerous generations of miners. Going down lower and lower, visitors will see most unusual places, to find out how rock salt surrendered itself to the power of human hands. They will also see great mining machinery and tools, learn about the mine background, associated with the legend of Princess Kinga, who brought the wealth of salt onto the Polish soil. In the middle of the route, one can see a wonderful chapel dedicated to her, and unique salt works of art decorating the location.
